LADWP readies Beacon Solar work

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday to start construction of the 250MW (ac) Beacon Solar Project.

The PV project in Kern County north of Los Angeles includes development of four sites through separate power purchase deals totaling 200MW.  Two of sites totaling 112MW have been awarded to Hecate Energy and two others totaling 88MW to SunEdison.

LADWP has tied each of these contracts to development of a group of small-scale feed-in-tariff solar projects within LADWP’s service area. Altogether, these “bundled” agreements will construct 50 MW of local solar – Hecate 28MW and SunEdison 22MW.

LADWP launched the FIT program in 2013.

A fifth site comprising Beacon Solar totals 50MW and is not “bundled” with a FIT component. Hecate Energy won this contract.

Beacon Solar will supply electricity for 127,000 homes, according to LADWP. It will also provide more than three percentage points toward California’s 25% renewable energy mandate by 2016.
