Wuxi Suntech mulls 1GW in Japan

Wuxi Suntech may spend up to $2.5bn to develop roughly 1GW of PV over the next three years in Japan, according to a local media report.

The Nikkei newspaper quoted Wuxi Suntech chief executive as saying that the company wants to build more solar projects and sell electricity in the country.

In August, Wuxi Suntech – the former production unit of fallen Chinese PV manufacturer Suntech Power – announced plans to terminate its R&D operations in Australia.

Shunfeng Photovoltaic International (SPI) purchased the company earlier this year and has since used the acquisition to transform itself into one of the global PV industry’s most ambitious players.

SPI recently said that by bringing Wuxi Suntech into the fold, it has raised its 2014 production forecast to 2.4GW of PV modules.

SPI plans to develop 4GW of PV throughout China by the end of this year.
