Even for a company as nimble and forward-thinking as NRG Energy Inc., 2014 has been a standout year – and one in which the New Jersey-based energy giant staked its future irreversibly to renewables, including small-scale, distributed sources.
Having launched a yieldco (NRG Yield) in the summer of 2013, NRG continued its aggressive evolution this year by acquiring three PV companies – Roof Diagnostics Solar, Pure Energies and Goal Zero – and unveiling a sweeping reorganisation looping its retail electricity and residential solar units into a single division, known as NRG Home.
