NextEra will pay $2.6bn for HEI, and says it will honour the utility’s goal of sourcing 65% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 – up from about 18% today.
HEI is the regulated electric utility for 95% of Hawaii’s 1.4 million people. Some 11% of its customers have PV installed on their rooftop, more than 20 times the national average.
