SunEdison, a subsidiary of US-based MEMC, has partnered with China’s Chint Group – owner of thin-film module producer Astronergy – for the projects, which were awarded as part of South Africa’s first renewables tender round late last year.

The two companies have worked together before, including on a 24MW array under development in India’s Rajasthan state.

Both the Witkop and Soutpan projects will be located in Limpopo, South Africa’s northernmost province, where relatively little renewables capacity has been allocated to date.
