The factory will produce about 30,000 modules a year for deployment on small, off-grid systems across the region following an undisclosed joint investment by Netherlands-based solar specialist Ubbink and battery group Chloride Exide.
Ubbink, a subsidiary of Germany’s Centrotec Sustainable group, took 30 workers to the Netherlands to train them on the advanced PV production equipment used at the plant.
The company says the technology is “completely new to East Africa” and will produce solar panels for remote rural communities hampered by lack of access to a power grid.
