The acqusition of Solar Chile gives its new American owner a range of early-to-mid-stage projects in northern Chile, including the Atacama Desert region, which First Solar says boasts the highest irradiance in the world.
First Solar bought the developer from Fundación Chile, a public-private incubator for technology-led companies run by the Chilean government and mining group BHP Billiton.
Jim Hughes, First Solar’s CEO, says: "We have been very impressed by the quality of the Solar Chile team and the projects they are developing, and we believe that together we will bring even more value to the Chilean market.”
