Construction of Shams 1 – which covers an area of 2.5 sq km and uses 768 tracking parabolic-trough collectors – has been underway since mid-2010.
Abu Dhabi’s state-owned Masdar owns 60% of Shams 1, with further 20% stakes held by French oil giant Total and Spanish renewables group Abengoa.
The plant claims the title of world’s largest operational CSP plant after its inauguration by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.
