Work starts at Antelope Valley
MidAmerican Solar has begun major construction of its 579MW Antelope Valley I and II projects in California, which together will become the world’s largest fully permitted solar PV project, according to the company.
When complete, the projects will provide enough electricity for approximately 400,000 homes. Southern California Edison will purchase all the power under long-term contract.
MidAmerican Solar is unit of MidAmerican Energy Holdings, part of billionaire Warren Buffet’s extensive portfolio of investments.
It bought the projects in January from SunPower, which designed and developed them.
SunPower was also contracted by MidAmerican Solar to provide engineering, procurement and construction. It will also provide operations and maintenance services for the plants via a multiyear agreement.
The companies estimate that the three-year project will employ 650 workers and generate more than $500m in economic impact for the region.
