On a giant patch of levelled swamp in southern Spain, German engineering giant Siemens is making its pitch for leadership of the burgeoning concentrated solar power (CSP) sector.

Siemens is building a state-of-the-art 50-megawatt (MW) plant that was initiated by Israeli CSP specialist Solel, which the German firm acquired last year.

The company wants the plant, which uses parabolic-trough technology to superheat synthetic oil and drive a steam turbine, to demonstrate its technological and manufacturing capacity.
