The California company says Nur Energie, a UK independent power producer, will use the LPT 550 system – a combination of heliostats surrounding a central power tower and boiler, with power block and controls – for a 38MW project on the Greek island of Crete. The dry-cooled technology is designed to limit water use.

A joint venture of Nur and Athens-listed petroleum refiner Motor Oil Hellas is developing the project, which BrightSource says was approved by Greek regulators in December.

Nur says it is mainly interested in CSP in Greece “due to the high solar radiation levels and attractive feed-in-tariff regime” and because its output mirrors the electricity demand profile both daily and seasonally.
