The Department of Energy (DOE) wants to support research and development of technologies that could reduce the cost of large-scale solar installations by 75%, to about $1 per watt, by the end of the decade “without additional subsidies”. That’s equivalent to a levelized cost of electricity of about $0.05-0.06/kWh.

Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced $27m for nine solar companies in various stages of development as part of the effort.
