The Japanese industrial chemicals group says it will go ahead with a second phase at Sarawak, Malaysia, adding about 13,800 tonnes of polycrystalline silicon production annually to the 6,000 tonnes already earmarked for the project’s first facility.

Tokuyama will begin work on the ¥100bn second-phase plant next April with production due to start in January 2015.

The company will also add an extra 1,800 tonnes of polysilicon capacity at the Tokuyama Factory in Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, at a cost of ¥11bn.
