The company says it never utilized a $5.9m federal renewable energy equipment manufacturing tax credit it was awarded to support the project because it "has not realized taxable income".

"Thus, those tax credits have not been claimed and have had no cost to US taxpayers," the California company says in a statement.

That's important because the solar industry remains the subject of partisan attacks – increasing in volume and frequency during this election year summer – due to the significant federal support it has received from the Obama Administration.
