The investigation follows a complaint led by Germany’s SolarWorld and backed by a number of other European firms alleging that China’s solar companies have been selling panels below market prices in the EU.

The European probe will seek to verify those claims, investigating Chinese exports of crystalline silicon modules and key components including cells and wafers.

If the EU finds evidence of dumping and imposes tariffs, it could devastate the industry, already hurting from US anti-dumping tariffs introduced in May on China-made solar cells and the global overcapacity pressuring selling prices.
