Update: LDK admits more than 5,000 staff axed this year

LDK Solar admits it has shed more than 5,000 workers since the beginning of the year, validating reports earlier this month that the integrated Chinese PV giant was trimming its workforce in response to the global downturn in solar prices.

In early April Sam Tong, LDK’s president and chief operating officer, toldRecharge that “there are no plans for large-scale cuts”.

But it now appears no such cuts were needed because they had already taken place.

In a conference call discussing LDK’s painful fourth-quarter 2011 financial results, chief financial officer Jack Lai said the company’s “most recent headcount” showed it had 5,254 fewer workers on its payroll than it did at the end of 2011 – and more than 9,000 fewer than last July.
