Last week, in the run-up to the Doha climate talks, a Saudi official told local press the country will commission its first large-scale solar project by 2015 – as part of a $100bn strategy to establish several gigawatts of generation capacity over the next 20 years.
The Saudi government has not yet pulled the trigger on the solar initiative, but approval is expected early next year.
