Apple to add third NC solar plant

Apple is planning to invest at least $55m in a 17.5MW solar PV facility in North Carolina that will join two others in Catawba County providing power for the technology giant’s large data center there.

The proposed facility would be located near the small City of Clarmont northwest of Charlotte, close to the data center in the Town of Maiden, according to the Hickory Record newspaper’s website.

The facility will come fully online within five years and could create as many as 75 jobs.

Apple has elected to own renewable energy generation capacity versus purchasing solar and wind power from third parties.

The company last year announced that it intends to build a solar farm in Nevada with electric utility NV Energy that will provide up to 20MW of power for a planned data center in Reno.
