IKEA "plugs-in" 4.9MW rooftop array

IKEA has officially “plugged-in” the expanded 4.9MW rooftop solar array atop its Perryville, Maryland, distribution center, among the largest of its kind in the eastern US.

IKEA contracted with Inovateus Solar to install an additional 2.2MW system built with 7,337 modules. The full 4.9MW system can now generate almost 6.1 million kWh of electricity annually.

Last year, IKEA achieved its goal of completing rooftop solar installations on 39 of 44 US buildings with a generation goal of 38MW.

IKEA owns and operates each of its solar PV energy systems and globally has allocated $1.8bn to invest in renewable energy through 2015.

This investment reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to sustainability and confidence in PV technology. IKEA has installed more than 550,000 solar panels on buildings across the world, and owns or operates 157 wind turbines in Europe and Canada.

IKEA has announced plans to purchase 49 wind turbines in Illinois.
