Tesla Motors has clipped the ribbon at the world’s largest lithium-ion battery project, a 20MW/80MWh installation for utility Southern California Edison that will help to integrate greater levels of renewables in the Golden State.

The energy-storage facility, located at an SCE substation 40 miles east of Los Angeles, will draw power off the grid at night and during off-peak hours and discharge it at times of peak demand, lessening the utility’s reliance on gas peaker plants.
