The record-low bid was submitted jointly by Chinese PV group JinkoSolar and Marubeni of Japan, according to local reports. The two companies have not so far issued a statement on the matter.

The bid to build the Sweihan project – confirmed in a report by the regional Emirates News Agency – trumps the $29.10 price offered by SolarPack in an auction in Chile earlier this year.

It also undercuts the $29.90/MWh seen in a Dubai tender in June, submitted by Abu Dhabi clean energy group Masdar.

Six pre-qualified bidders submitted proposals in the auction, which is being run by The Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Company (ADWEC).

The auction was based around an “innovative tariff structure” weighted towards production in the summer months, it was reported.

The utilities will now evaluate the technical merits of the bids before signing a PPA with the winning consortium early next year.
