Šefčovic – who is leading the European Commission’s drive for energy union – was among the guests at an event in Brussels organised by industry body SolarPower Europe (SPE) to mark the milestone figure, which was passed in the first half of this year.

The EU Commissioner said the explosive growth of solar over the last decade is something “that every European citizen can and should be proud of”, adding that ambitious PV targets put in place by emerging nations – notably India – have been directly inspired by Europe’s achievements.

Šefčovic’s message was reinforced by SPE chief executive James Watson, who pointed out that the 100GW was enough to power 30 million European homes.
