Accelerated depreciation allows companies to offset their taxes on income from other sources by investing in wind projects. It has been the main driver in India until now. One effect of accelerated depreciation has been the proliferation of non-wind companies investing in smaller projects.Critics say the scheme has led to investors focusing on per-megawatt costs rather than efficiency and cost of energy.
