US moves too boost hydro development at federal level

The Obama administration is moving to improve coordination and align priorities among federal agencies to support development of environmentally sustainable hydropower, which provided 7% of US electricity supply in 2009.

“While hydropower is the largest source of renewable electricity in the nation, hydropower capacity has not increased significantly in decades,” says Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

A memorandum of understanding between the US Energy and Interior Department s and Army Corps of Engineers was touted by Chu and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar as a new approach to hydropower development.

The document aims to avoid or reduce environmental impacts while focusing on increasing energy generation at existing federally-owned facilities.
