Early-warning system ensures the safety of millions of migratory birds

The St Nikola wind farm is situated near one of the busiest migration routes on the planet - the so-called Via Pontica, a stretch of the Black Sea coast along which millions of birds travel between their breeding grounds and wintering quarters.

The development is also close to a conservation park and an ecologically sensitive grassland steppe. Bird studies in 1994 for a wind farm that was to be developed there led to the project being halted because of the concern about the damage that could be done to habitats during construction.
