OPT gets first federal permit for US wave-power plant

Wave-energy specialist Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has been given the go-ahead by the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) for a 1.5MW grid-connected development off Reedsport, Oregon.

The 35-year FERC licence – issued to its subsidiary Reedsport OPT Wave Park – is the first for a wave-power station in the US, says OPT.

It covers deployment of up to ten, 150kW OPT PowerBuoy devices, which would generate enough electricity for some 1,500 households.

Construction of the first PB150 is nearing completion. It is expected to be ready for installation in water depths of 45-73 metres some 4km offshore later this year.
