Scotland chosen to host UK's second Marine Energy Park

The Pelamis P2 is one of the devices undergoing trials in the area

Northern Scotland’s Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters have been designated as the UK’s second Marine Energy Park (MEP).

The new development will incorporate the European Marine Energy Centre (Emec), where front-running devices – including wave machines such as the Pelamis P2 and Aquamarine Power’s Oyster, and Andritz Hydro Hammerfest’s HS1000 tidal turbine – are being run in nine of the facility’s 14 full-scale test berths.

The site is in a swathe of water that overlaps the world’s first commercial-scale leasing round for marine energy.

The UK Crown Estate in 2010 awarded eleven development companies leases that could ultimately generate some 1.6GW (600MW from wave and 1GW from tidal-stream) – enough electricity…
