US tidal milestone as Maine project gets grid-connected

The US’s first commercial tidal energy project has been grid-connected off Maine by developer Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC).

The company’s Cobscook Bay project, located off Eastport in water depths of 33 metres, is built around its 150kW TidGen device – development of which was underpinned by a $10m investment from the US Department of Energy (DoE).

In April, the Maine Public Utilities Commission gave the green-light to 20-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) for the project with the Central Maine Power Company, Bangor Hydro Electric (BHE) and Maine Public Service Company. Those deals are the first long-term tidal energy PPAs in the US.
