IHC Merwede buys Wave Rotor and forms tidal-energy arm

Steenge foresees a significant growth of activities in wave and tidal sectors

Dutch maritime contractor IHC Merwede has signed a deal with compatriot company Ecofys to buy its Wave Rotor technology, and will now form a new marine renewables division called IHC Tidal Energy.

The company plans to bring the tidal turbine technology – a vertical-axis system being piloted at 30kW-scale in the Netherlands province of Westerschelde – to international commercial roll-out.

“The acquisition of Wave Rotor technology enables IHC Merwede to launch a fully integrated system to generate electricity using tidal energy,” says managing director Willem Steenge.

Although he admits that the market for tidal and wave technology is still in its infancy, Steenge foresees a “significant growth” of activities in the sectors in Europe, North America and Asia.
