Atlantis to lead UK tidal array cost-reduction initiative

Marine-energy developer Atlantis Resources is to lead a project to cut the cost of deploying commercial-scale tidal power arrays, UK Energy Minister Charles Hendry has announced.

The Tidal Energy Converter (TEC) System Demonstrator project, awarded by government-industry body the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI), will use a “through-life approach” to identify, develop and prove the best routes to market for tidal-stream technologies in British waters.

“Reducing costs to levels comparable to other low-carbon systems is critical in accelerating the development and commercialisation of tidal energy,” said Hendry.

“This is part of a co-ordinated programme of public sector support to innovation in marine energy, which is expected to exceed £80m over the next few years.”
