US finishes Florida ocean energy lease environmental review

The US Interior Department (DOI) is seeking public comment on an environmental assessment that considers the effects of issuing a lease for testing marine hydrokinetic technology off the east coast of Florida.

BOEM has made available for public review and comment its environmental assessment, which also considers any socioeconomic effects that could result from a lease. It found that no historic underwater properties would be affected by the proposed project.

Florida Atlantic University’s Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC) is seeking a lease to deploy an experimental demonstration device. This is the first lease application that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), an agency of DOI, has received to test ocean current equipment.
