Boost for UK Wave Hub as Ireland's Ocean Energy signs up

The OE Buoy has been trialled as a quarter-scale prototype for the last three years

Struggling UK offshore marine-energy testing centre Wave Hub has secured a second technology developer for its 20MW grid-connected facility, with Ireland’s Ocean Energy planning to plug in its 1.5MW OE Buoy later this year.

The deal with Ocean Energy means two of the four berths at Wave Hub, off the south-west coast of England, have now been reserved.

US company Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has signed up to put its 500kW PowerBuoy machine in the water, though no date for installation has been set.

“Ocean Energy is ready to make the next step to Wave Hub with a full-scale device,” says Wave Hub general manager Claire Gibson. “If the testing goes well we expect to see Ocean Energy deploy an array of devices."

Wave Hub will match-fund
