Hammerfest Strøm lowers 1MW tidal device into place

Technology developer Hammerfest Strøm has lowered its flagship HS1000 tidal turbine into place at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney, Scotland, as plans gear up at parent company ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) to build a landmark full-scale array starting in 2013.

The 1MW machine, a scaled-up version of a grid-connected 300kW prototype that has been operating in the currents of Norway’s Kvalsundet fjord since 2003, is expected to move into fully operational performance and reliability testing early in the New Year.

SPR was awarded planning consent by the Scottish government in March 2011 for a 10MW development in the Sound of Islay.
