Hyundai Heavy to pursue tidal projects after Korea tests

Hyundai Heavy is using concepts developed in shipbuilding for tidal innovation

Shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has completed the first trial phase of a 500kW tidal power generator off Jeollanan-do, in south west Korea.

The pilot turbine used for the demonstration project in Uldolmok Passage drew on propeller concepts developed by HHI's shipbuilding arm and power generation technology from its electrical equipment division.

After carrying out factory and basin tests last year, HHI began producing power from the site in May.

Based on initial test results, the company says it “plans to pursue tidal power farm projects by scaling up generators”.

HHI is part of a Korean government-backed programme to develop megawatt-class tidal power farms that is due to complete its work in 2014.
