OpenHydro's Bay of Fundy tidal device to be pulled from seabed

The problems are worse than initially feared for OpenHydro's tidal-energy device

Problems with OpenHydro’s tidal-energy device in Canada’s Bay of Fundy are worse than initially feared, meaning it will have to be pulled from the seabed this autumn and taken for repairs.

Last month Ireland’s OpenHydro acknowledged that a wireless data communication system on its pioneering tidal device had failed little more than a week after being deployed in the rapid currents of a stretch known as Minas Passage.

The company has since managed to capture limited video footage of the turbine.

“Preliminary analysis of the images by engineers has led to the conclusion that the turbine rotor may have been damaged,” it says.
