UK selects five proposals to harness Severn estuary tides

Surfing the River Severn Bore at Newnham near Gloucester, which will become a thing of the past if plans for a new barrage across the river Severn are carried out.

Five projects have been short listed by the UK Government for generating green electricity from the power of the tides in the Severn estuary – the second highest tidal range in the world.

The list unveiled by the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change includes a mixture of barrages and innovative lagoon schemes.

Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband has also announced £500,000 of funding to further develop embryonic technologies like tidal reefs and fences.

The proposed shortlist includes:

Cardiff Weston Barrage: A barrage crossing the Severn estuary from Brean Down, near Weston super Mare to Lavernock Point, near Cardiff.
