Scotland’s proposed 1.6GW of wave and tidal projects, located mainly in Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters, would currently face charges of £56m ($87.9m) each year to connect to the grid, according to the industry body.

This compares to an £11m subsidy they would receive if they were situated off the southwest coast of England, home to Wave Hub. This is the UK’s only other test-site for marine renewables and is closer to major centres of population, so benefiting from existing charging arrangements.
