Euro-lawmakers back key clean-energy R&D with $7.8bn

Euro-members backed wind and other renewables

The European Parliament's Energy and Research Committee (ITRE) has earmarked €6bn ($7.8bn) of its next research budget for renewables, energy efficiency, smart grids and storage.

Based on the agreement, the ITRE will now start negotiations with the European Commission over the funding, which gives the sectors 75% of the energy support available under Europe’s Horizon 2020 R&D initiative.

"MEPs (members of the European Parliament) have understood how crucial wind energy and other renewables are to the EU's economic growth, technology leadership, fighting climate change, and that sufficient R&D funding is essential to further their development," says European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) regulatory affairs advisor Vilma Radvilaite.
