Offshore mix for 'eco-friendly 14GW in UK's southwest'

The wind, waves and tides off the southwest coast of the UK could be tapped for some 14GW of clean energy without the need for an industrial-scale development such as the controversial Severn Barrage, claims a new report.

By combining technologies including in-stream tidal turbines and tidal range “lagoon” and “fence” concepts with wave- and wind-farms, the study by regional development body Regen SW and consultants Marine Energy Matters claims the Bristol Channel area could produce low-carbon energy while protecting the environment.

The report Bristol Channel Energy: A Balanced Technology Approach says a series of large-scale schemes could be rolled out as technologies are proven and their environmental impacts closely studied.
