EU gives $17m to help link pumped-hydro with renewables

The European Commission has awarded ¿13.3m to the eStorage initiative

The European Commission has awarded €13.3m ($17.4m) to a consortium to develop a GWh-scale energy storage system that would pave the way for the integration of renewables into the continent’s grid.

The cornerstone of the eStorage project – being run by French power group Alstom; Belgian transmission system operator Elia; French utility EDF, UK university Imperial College; Norwegian certification body DNV Kema; and French management consultancy Algoé – will be upgrading Le Cheylas pumped-storage hydroelectric plant to handle “several hundred megawatts” of incoming renewable generation.

The consortium will also develop solutions using advanced energy and market-management systems to couple the dispatch of storage plants with renewable generation, to make it possible for pumped hydro to help balance market supply and demand.
