US solar funding backs CSP, cost reductions and Soitec plant

The US Department of Energy (DOE), whose budget for renewables has been targeted by Congressional Republicans, continues to pump money into promising solar research, start-up companies and advanced manufacturing efforts.

The DOE earlier this month announced $56m for concentrating solar power (CSP) technology research; $25m to help Soitech build a concentrating PV (CPV) factory in San Diego; $8m in funding for nine startup companies in the SunShot Incubator; and a $10m competition aimed at driving the installed cost of rooftop solar to $2 per watt.

Through its SunShot initiative, launched in early 2011, the DOE aims to foster a solar industry that can generate electricity at costs competitive with conventional power by 2020.
