Ecoislands: Smart-grid tests in Isle of Wight ‘living laboratory’

Ecoisland is counting on a mix of renewable sources to help the Isle of Wight become self-sufficient in energy by 2020.

Chief executive David Green claims that self-sufficiency is feasible with smart-grid technologies delivering 40% savings in energy use across the 380sq-km island.

The strategy aims to use smart grids to reduce peak demand from 167MW to 120MW, while a proposed tidal array could provide up to 20MW, and the local solar sector could have its capacity nearly doubled to more than 70MW.

“We have already got 40MW of solar with hardly anyone noticing. So all this talk about ‘unsightly wind turbines’ is, I think, an unnecessary distraction,” says Green.
