The
Xtreme
Power
Dynamic
Power
Resource
(DPR)
–
consisting
of
lead-acid
batteries,
controls
and
power
electronics
to
absorb
and
release
power,
smoothing
the
wind
project's
output
to
the
grid
–
was
commissioned
in
March
2011
at
the
30MW
Kahuku
Wind
project
on
the
North
Shore
of
Hawaii.
The
cause
is
still
under
investigation,
but
the
fire
is
likely
to
increase
scrutiny
of
the
energy
storage
technology
just
as
it
is
gaining
momentum
as
an
important
enabler
of
increasing
volumes
of
wind
and
solar
energy.
