Australian wind project links battery with weather algorithms

An Australian government-backed trial is underway of new energy storage technology designed to make more efficient use of intermittent wind power.

Ecoult, the company leading the initiative, claims the trial at the Hampton Wind Farm near Sydney is one of the largest storage projects in the Southern Hemisphere.

The research links Ecoult’s UltraBattery system with algorithms designed to analyse weather patterns and fine-tune the storage system to the power input that is on the way, helping to smooth-out supply to the grid.

“The over-arching objective of this research is to achieve higher penetration of wind and renewable energy in grid systems,” Ecoult chief executive John Wood says.
