UK's approach to energy storage 'ill designed', experts say

UK engineers are calling for “urgent action” by the British government to bolster development of new-breed electricity storage technologies that will be key to providing secure supply around the country as it continues the transition toward a greater reliance on renewable-energy resources.

According to UK National Grid figures, the UK will need 8GW of capacity by 2025 if the penetration of wind power in the network reaches 30%. It currently has 2.8GW of capacity in the form of pumped hydro storage.

“As the UK ramps up its dependence on power generation from intermittent renewable energy sources, like the wind, the need to develop electricity storage technologies becomes ever more pressing,” says Tim Fox, head of energy and environment at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

“For too long we’ve been reliant on using expensive ‘back-up’…
