Narec seeking industry partners for 100MW offshore test site

The UK National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) is moving ahead with plans for the country’s largest offshore wind turbine testing site by pushing the button on a procurement process to identify industry partners for the project off the coast of north-east England.

Narec has applied for a development permit for the 100MW Blyth Offshore Wind Demonstration Site (BOWDS), which will have 15 pre-consented “pods” arranged in three arrays in water depths ranging from 38 metres to 57 metres.

The test facility is expected to cost £333m ($523m).

“The turbines to be installed will be fleet leaders, a Formula 1 class of offshore machines, and the site will provide the catalyst for taking these next generation technologies through to full production,” says Narec chief executive Andrew Mill.
