UK puts up $8m more for large offshore turbine innovators

Winners of the funding will be told in the autumn

The UK government is rolling out the second round of a funding scheme designed to accelerate development of novel, large-scale offshore wind turbine technologies.

The Offshore Wind Component Technologies Development and Demonstration initiative will see £5m ($8m) allocated to back cost-cutting designs for components used in 5MW-plus turbines.

The scheme – run by the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and Technology Strategy Board (TSB) – will also encompass concepts for foundations, connection and transmission, installation, and operation and maintenance.
