Copper plating helps Hyundai Heavy to new solar cell record

The record was set using standard wafers

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is claiming a new world record for energy-conversion in a selective-emitter PV cell after reaching 19.7% efficiency with its copper-contact technology.

The Korean group says the new standard, verified by German research body Fraunhofer ISE, was set using conventional 156mm commercial-grade p-type silicon wafers.

Researchers at HHI fine-tuned existing LDSE (laser-doped selective emitter) technology to create the new solar cell with copper plating.

The record-setting copper-front-contact selective-emitter cell has a full-area aluminum-alloyed back electrode.

As usual with LDSE a laser-based selective doping process is combined with a plating technology, but to form copper contacts at the front – rather than traditional silver ones – thereby cutting the cost of production by 10-30% compared Log in to read complete article.
