Mitsui takes stake in US Tres Amigas grid interconnection

Japanese conglomerate Mitsui will invest $12m to obtain an equity stake in the 5GW Tres Amigas project, which will link three US electricity transmission systems and allow substantially more renewable energy onto what would become a national grid.

The so-called “superstation” integrating the 240GW Western, 600GW Eastern and 70GW Texas interconnections will be built in New Mexico.

It will coordinate power flow across regional network borders with market-based dispatching using a vast underground network of AC/DC converters and superconductor pipelines.

The clean-generating capacities and the needs of varying regions, including the state’s renewable portfolio standard requirements, will have more opportunities to be accommodated.

By partnering with Tres Amigas, Mitsui will build on a global business model that includes smart-grid information technology, renewable energy development and management, and CO 2 emissions-mitigation strategies.
