VW to sell electric cars 'with renewable power supply package'

The electric version of VW's new Up! may come bundled with renewable power

German car-maker Volkswagen plans to offer drivers a fully-renewable power supply as part of a package-deal with its next generation of electric vehicles (EVs), according to reports.

VW will make electricity from renewable sources available to future buyers of cars such the electric version of its soon-to-be launched Up! small runaround, as well as radical VW designs including a single-seat, ultra-efficient concept EV, says the Financial Times.

The company’s head of research Jürgen Leohold says packaging vehicles with renewable energy would remove the most often cited environmental downside to EVs – that there is no guarantee over the green credentials of the power they consume.
